He spent the early stages of 2017 recovering from a shattered orbital bone, but Austin Aries has been in tremendous form since returning to the ring in March. In strictly numerical terms, his record is even more impressive than Neville’s, as while Aries hasn’t wrestled as many matches as the current Cruiserweight Champion, his win percentage sits at an outstanding 76%.

The losses are critical, however.

Aries has featured in some of the division’s biggest matches this year, but has walked away empty handed every single time. He technically defeated Neville at Payback, but it was via disqualification, and he left without the Championship. Neville has beaten him cleanly at Extreme Rules and WrestleMania 33, showing that while Aries has no problem getting it done against the division’s gatekeepers, he isn’t quite on the champ’s level.

Austin recently announced that he’d be taking some time away from WWE television, and there’s no word on when he’s expected to return. He’ll likely retain a strong push when he does come back, but having failed to take the Cruiserweight Championship on three separate occasions, the opportunity to wear gold may have passed him by.
