AJ Styles set WWE ablaze this year. The Phenomenal One has been pulling-off outstanding matches at a shockingly prolific rate since debuting at the 2016 Royal Rumble, and his high-profile bouts with Roman Reigns and John Cena sit among the year's finest. He has become SmackDown's undisputed ace at the age of 39, and after several decades grinding through the world's smaller stages, it's nothing less than what he deserves.

AJ finished the year with a 69% win percentage, marking him as one of the company's most successful wrestlers. He has always been regarded as one of the best wrestlers on the planet, but when he was signed, many questioned WWE's ability to use AJ effectively and efficiently. Fortunately, those concerns have not come to pass, and Styles is fast becoming WWE's franchise player.

That's not to say 2016 hasn't been without its disappointments, however. AJ's WrestleMania 32 loss to Chris Jericho was one to forget and he does have three L's to James Ellsworth on his record, but those failings aren't enough to blot his copybook. The current WWE Champion has continually faced the company's strongest competition since signing from NJPW in January, and with Styles set to defend his title against John Cena at the Royal Rumble, the theme will continue in 2017.
