It's hard to get about excited the Royal Rumble when WWE itself isn't even excited for it. The legendary event is renowned for its marquee match that is capable of turning the WWE landscape on its head, forging the WrestleMania main events and crafting new stars in the processes. It's something that every superstar craves to such an extent that they're willing to do battle with 29 others to get it. Looking at this year's build-up, however, you honestly wouldn't know it.

The journey to this year's Royal Rumble has been lacklustre at best - particularly on the Raw front. That's not to say that there hasn't been a build towards the event - because there has been one (just not a very good one). Before Edge's announcement on Raw, everything about this year's Royal Rumble felt very business-as-usual - but not in a very Royal Rumble kind of way. This legendary event is a piece of WWE history because of it's titular matches. It's more than just any old PPV. Unfortunately, the WWE creative team has clearly forgotten that.

With the lack of effort WWE is putting into promoting the Royal Rumble itself, you can see why hopes aren't high for the event.
