It's a story that often goes untold in the annals of WWE lore, but the company's original plan for the inaugural SummerSlam was not The Mega Powers vs. The Mega Bucks. The plan was to sign Ric Flair from the NWA, and build the main-event picture around him going forward. That meant a main-event between him and Randy Savage.

According to the man himself; “I was on my way to work for Vince McMahon and wrestle Randy Savage at the Garden. My contract was up and Vince McMahon had been in touch with me. But I decided my best move was to remain in the NWA because I was so attached to my friends in the Four Horsemen. I thanked McMahon for the offer. I just couldn’t get myself to leave."

It should go without saying here, but a debuting Ric Flair knocking off Randy Savage could only have led in one possible direction... Hogan in the main-event of WrestleMania V. While this was the '80s dream match fans have historically lamented, it means we'd have been deprived of the explosion of the Mega Powers and Randy'sAH legendaryOOOOH promoAH aboutUH-HUN Hulk HoganYEAH andUH MissSA ElizabethOH.
