In 2009, Jeff Hardy was the WWE Champion, and he was on course to retain against Edge at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Alongside that, his brother Matt had an opportunity to win the ECW Championship from Jack Swagger earlier in the night.
Both brothers were heading to the top of their respective divisions until Matt failed to capture the ECW title. Later in the night, the world saw the dark side of the eldest Hardy brother.
During Jeff's title defence against Edge, it seemed as though 'The Charismatic Enigma' was set to retain his WWE Championship when his brother emerged and attacked him with a steel chair. This brutal beating led to Hardy losing his title to 'The Rated-R Superstar', which he did not take lightly.
The brothers brawled week after week, from Matt's attack all the way to their hard-hitting bout at WrestleMania 25, with the now-'Broken' Hardy taunting his brother regularly, going so far as to claim he burned down his house - along with his pet dog that was inside.
This story showcased that not even blood can be trusted in WWE, as everyone wants to reach the top and nobody is safe.
