Wrestlers with job gimmicks were prevalent in mid-90s professional wrestling. It is one of the elements of WWE’s New Generation that is often mocked in retrospect. In 1996, Duke ‘The Dumpster’ Droese wasn’t the only entrant with a side-gig. That year’s Rumble included a dentist, a pig farmer, a football/soccer player, and a NASCAR driver.

Even before Droese entered the commentary team joked about his chances. Vince McMahon asked audiences to imagine a garbage man going to WrestleMania to face the WWE Champion. Also, fans at home saw little of Droese’s actual time in the Rumble as the cameras were fixed on Shawn Michaels, The British Bulldog, and Owen Hart, brawling on the outside as a flurry of referees tried to break them up. Droese was seen briefly throwing hands with Kamala, before he and Diesel, tipped Duke over the top rope.

Duke Droese is a fondly remembered, offbeat character, whose sole WWE accomplishment is a Slammy Award for “Most Smelliest”, which he shared with Henry O. Godwinn. In hindsight, he and #29 (British Bulldog) should have probably swapped lots.
