10 Biggest Last-Minute WWE WrestleMania Main Event Changes
5. The Lost Smile Incident - WrestleMania 13
WrestleMania 13 should have been a slam dunk.
Shawn Michaels, who had beaten Bret Hart for the WWE title at the previous Mania, had just won the belt back from Sycho Sid at the 1997 Royal Rumble. This set the stage perfectly for a Hart/Michaels rematch with The Hitman going over to tie up their series.
This was the plan, until Shawn Michaels remembered that he was Shawn Michaels and decided to ruin everything.
Claiming that he'd hurt his knee - these claims have been disputed a lot in the years since - HBK vacated the belt just over a month out from the biggest show of the year. He claimed that he'd "lost his smile", which is a funny way of saying "I don't want to put Bret over."
This led to a four corners elimination match for the vacant belt at In Your House, which Hart won. Then, the next night on Raw, the Canadian lost the strap to Sid.
All this was to set up a title match between Sid and The Undertaker for the main event of WrestleMania, whilst Hart went on to have one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time against Stone Cold Steve Austin.
