The Main Event. February 5th 1988. 33 million people tuned in to watch the most-viewed televised wrestling event of all time.

The reason? Hulk Hogan is defending his WWE Championship against Andre the Giant.

In a move that stunned the world, the gigantic Frenchman ended Hogan's four year long reign with a huge dose of cheating involving twin referees. The surprises continued when, just a matter of seconds later, Andre "sold" the title to the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase.

This was all done to set up the night-long tournament at WrestleMania IV to crown a new, undisputed WWE Champion. The final of the bracket came down to DiBiase and Randy Savage, with the Macho Man walking out of Trump Plaza as world champion.

As the story goes, DiBiase was originally meant to win the tournament with Savage capturing the Intercontinental Championship from the Honky Tonk Man instead. However, when Honky shot this idea down, plans were rejigged to have at least one babyface champion at the end of WrestleMania.

So a rich guy couldn't beat a Slim Jim salesman all because an Elvis impersonator said no? Wrestling is utterly bonkers, isn't it?
