8. Vince McMahon Is A Genius

Almost anyone who has ever worked for Vince McMahon (and wants to stay in the good graces of his company) has two things to say about him: he’s a genius and a brilliant businessman. He is neither.

Vince has hired a lot of talented people over the years, but he’s hired just as many people that had no talent. In the mid ‘80s, he was innovating the business, and giving the world a new way to watch wrestling. The production values were slick, the characters were colorful and the entire product was like a cartoon come to life. Then, when those kids in the audience grew up and were tired of cartoons, the man they looked towards to give them their wrestling had no other ideas. His product grew stale, and he fell badly behind the times to ECW and WCW in terms of innovation.

Besides four incredible years in the late '90s, his product has gone back to being mediocre at best. What genius spearheads hundreds of bland, to boring, to downright terrible programs? David Chase (The Sopranos), or David Simon (The Wire) he is not. He is lucky. His competitors' boneheaded ideas put them out of business first, and since he was the only game in town, he became the major leagues of wrestling partly by default, which will likely never be taken away from him.

For some more brief examples of why he’s not a genius...well, it’s hard to even know where to begin, but how about: the WCW Invasion, the nWo invasion, the ECW relaunch, a handful of racist and stereotypical characters, Hornswoggle, his inability to push women until 2015, countless storylines stopped and started and a WRESTLING program that has revolved around the McMahon’s and one of their spouses for the past 18 years to continually declining ratings.

Vince has given us some brilliant moments over the years, and he's built himself quite the spectacle, but his batting average for truly entertaining content is amazingly low. He's spearheaded a product that hasn’t received critical acclaim going on 16 years now.

For more in-depth explanations on why Vince McMahon is not a genius, well, here you go!

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
