10 Biggest Main Events In WWE SmackDown History
4. Steve Austin Vs. Chris Benoit (31 May 2001)
Here's the second of those May 2001 classics, this time featuring a newly heel Stone Cold Steve Austin - watched by Vince McMahon at ringside - defending his WWF Title against hometown hero Chris Benoit.
Wrestling - in particular free-to-watch wrestling - doesn't really get much better than this, both men putting in the type of punishing performances you would normally associate with one of the big four shows, let alone a mid-year episode of pre-brand extension SmackDown.
A nearly-man for almost all of his career, Benoit once again played the role of someone who - for all his effort, including 10 consecutive German Suplexes - came up agonisingly short. His coronation, to the chagrin of the Winnipeg crowd, would have to wait another three years.
But at the very least Vince McMahon took one of the biggest ass-kickings of his life courtesy of a vicious chair assault, whose distraction was enough for Stone Cold to roll-up his opponent for an undeserved three count. Say what you like about heel Austin but, on this occasion, it really, really worked.
