When The New Day's record-breaking tag team title reign ended in December 2016, they briefly seemed devoid of purpose. A 'host' gig at WrestleMania 33 was arguably the most honourable consolation prize the company have ever dished out, but many predicted a split on the grandest stage to send all three performers on brand new paths.

Pleasingly, their trade to SmackDown Live! was the shake-up they so desperately needed. Three match of the year contenders with The Usos facilitated two separate runs with the SmackDown Tag Team Titles, and with credibility restored, the trio led SmackDown Live!'s charge against Monday Night Raw (and particularly The Shield) into battle at the Survivor Series.

Both efforts were lost causes. The blue brand lost the meaningless war whilst Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods lost an enjoyable clash to The Shield to give Raw the best possible start on the night. With WrestleMania season around the corner and the trio again shy of reasons to be, this could and should be the year where the laughter finally stops.
