10 Biggest Missed Opportunities From AEW So Far

5. Booking The Orange Cassidy/Chris Jericho Rematch Far Too Soon

Chris Jericho vs Orange Cassidy at Fyter Fest was among the best match esthat Dynamite has programmed so far.

It was reminiscent of the TV masterpiece with Jeff Hardy and The Undertaker on Raw, where the young rookie earned respect from everyone watching as he kept fighting against his ruthless veteran opponent. It was that totally organic, beautiful in-ring narrative that doesn’t appear often. Cassidy might not have won, but it defined him more than a victory ever could have, it proved how just how essential he was and how great he’s going to be.

It was something that needed to be left alone for a while to ever have the chance of repeating the impact of the original. Unfortunately, AEW did what many companies do when two workers have a classic out of nowhere and booked it again too quickly. In matches like this where workrate isn’t as important as the physical storytelling, attempting to do the same narrative weeks later is guaranteed to produce lesser results. Furthermore, the comedic elements of the feud have taken priority over the aspects that made their initial pairing special.

If they’d just waited a few months or so for the freshness to return, we could have had one of the most euphoric character arcs in recent memory with Cassidy. A sad missed opportunity.
