10 Biggest Mysteries Still Surrounding WrestleMania 33
2. What Will The Main Event Be?
Last year’s WrestleMania main event was a huge flop.
Triple H vs. Roman Reigns was an overlong, plodding match between two wrestlers with very little in-ring credibility, and Reigns’ coronation as WWE Champion closed a lacklustre show on a sour note. It was a dire match, one of the worst on the card, and one that will surely prompt WWE to book a more compelling conclusion for this year’s event.
There are a couple of candidates for this year’s headlining spot. Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt might be WWE’s most compelling storyline at the moment, and while AJ Styles and Luke Harper are set to fight for the right to “face Wyatt at WrestleMania,” neither will have that honour. The plan is still Orton vs. Wyatt for the WWE Championship, and the match should be cemented as soon as Orton pulls his long-awaited turn on Wyatt.
Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar is the most likely option. The former is expected to take Kevin Owens’ Universal Championship at Fastlane, and in terms of pure star power, WWE don’t have a better option for WrestleMania’s top spot. There are huge doubts over Goldberg’s ability to wrestle for any longer than a couple of minutes, however, and booking him vs. Lesnar to close the show is a big risk.
Do WWE really want to close Mania with a match that might struggle to break five minutes? Who knows - but anything should be better than last year’s debacle.
