The feud between Randy Orton and Triple H that dominated Raw in early 2009 was super-personal. First, Orton attacked Vince McMahon, punting him in the head. Then, he DDTed Stephanie McMahon, finally forcing Triple H to admit onscreen that the two of them were husband and wife. Triple H retaliated by breaking into Orton's home and attacking him.

At WrestleMania 25, HHH came out on top, but the next evening, Orton wanted another title shot. That brought out a furious Vince McMahon, who made a six-man tag team match for Backlash - Orton and Legacy versus HHH, Shane McMahon, and Vince McMahon. Vince also booked himself versus Orton for later in the evening.

The Vince/Orton match quickly turned into a cluster, with Shane McMahon, Triple H, and Legacy all getting involved. When the heels seemed to have the upper hand, though, the music of Dave Batista hit, and "The Animal" - who had been hurt at the previous SummerSlam - ran to the ring to make the save.

A manic Vince then announced that Batista would be taking his place at Backlash.
