WrestleMania has been WWE's annual showcase since 1985. It's given the most hype each year, is clearly-presented as being above every other pay-per-view on the calendar and probably splurges more on pyro in one night than 90% of the roster are paid for 12 months. So, what changed in 2021?

Crown Jewel. That's what.

WWE's first jaunt over to Saudi Arabia since February 2020 was given a pre-show hype machine to rival 'Mania 37. Being honest, the 21 October stadium show in Riyadh was promoted as being equal to or almost superior than the "Grandaddy Of Them All", which felt flat out strange to older fans reared on WrestleMania's pageantry.

Admittedly, Crown Jewel did end up being the best Saudi show to date, but that doesn't really excuse WWE acting like it topped their traditional summit. What the hell happened to 'Mania's standalone lustre?

Why did it have to share that with another unwanted international trip?
