4. His debut PPV match against The Rock
After a few years away from the business, Bill returned to spear WWE’s biggest star out of his boots and looked set to be just as big a deal in his new home as he had been in WCW. Positioning Goldberg against The Rock, in what has essentially been Steve Austin’s spot only days before, immediately acknowledged Da Man as a big deal. In hindsight, however, perhaps “The Most Electrifying Man In Sports Entertainment” wasn’t the best first feud for Goldberg.
Ostensibly playing heel, “The Brahma Bull” was still so beloved that it led to fan support being divided when the company’s newest badass babyface needed their support.
Ahead of their battle at Backlash 2003 there were already warning signs that WWE’s creative team didn’t entirely get Big Bill’s iconic character. These included Goldberg mucking about in Goldust’s wig to mild amusement.
Still, no one was prepared for the disappointment at the PPV. Bill picked up the win but after thirteen minutes of sluggish action that exposed “Da Man’s” limitations the air was already out of the balloon.
