2. His Feud With Triple H
After his match with The Rock WWE did a half-decent job of rebuilding “Da Man” with short, dominant wins. With fans desperate to see an end to the reign of terror, a programme with Triple H could have established Goldberg as a true top guy in WWE.
A proposed SummerSlam bout was switched to an Elimination chamber to cover a Triple H injury and, given that Trips could barely walk, it seemed the perfect time to make the title switch. Sure enough, Goldberg ploughed through the field, decimating guys… only for Triple H to pin him after a trademark sledgehammer blow to the head.
Goldberg did subsequently get his hands on the belt at Unforgiven 2003 but the slog of a title match went on for nearly fifteen minutes. Again, WWE booked Big Bill as if he was anyone other than Goldberg and then began to lose confidence in him when he didn’t excel outside of his comfort zone.
Finally the champion, it already felt too late with both fans and creative losing interest. It didn’t help that instead of a badly needed fresh direction, WWE kept Triple H sniffing around the title picture until he inevitably got his belt back.
Whether it was “The Game’s” backstage politics or Vince’s reluctance to truly push a WCW guy, this feud was a nightmare for Goldberg. His best bet now was to cut his losses and have a memorable, brilliant WrestleMania match on his own way out. Oh, but wait, we covered that already…
