As per tradition, the winner of the G1 Climax must defend his Wrestle Kingdom championship opportunity against anyone who defeated him during the tournament. As such, Kazuchika Okada attempted to wrest the coveted briefcase away from his longtime rival and G1 28 winner, Hiroshi Tanahashi. The two men have had epic encounters over the years including Wrestle Kingdom main events for the IWGP belt, itself.

In past encounters, Okada has frequently come out the victor, but in Kobe, Tanahashi was able to topple the former champion for the first time in over three years. It was a grueling half-hour battle which saw the competitors frequently counter each other's signature moves -- thanks to their long history together. Tanahashi avoided a Rainmaker clothesline, delivering a Sling Blade in retaliation. Meanwhile, Okada caught his opponent with a dropkick as he flew off the top rope.

In the end, Tanahashi scored the decisive win he's sought for years after delivering three consecutive High Fly Flow top-rope splashes. It was a moment of vindication for New Japan's Ace, as 2018 has become his year of resurgence. Unfortunately, his moment in the sun was quickly overshadowed by Okada's stablemate, Jay White.
