10 Biggest Storyline Mysteries Of The WWE PG Era
8. Why Did The Great Khali Return At Battleground 2017
The 2017 WWE Title reign of Jinder Mahal was one that fans wish to forget. However, this was no fault of Mahal who was put in an unwinnable position. It was virtually impossible for him to have a compelling reign, based on the fact that he'd spent his entire WWE career prior being a complete jobber.
One of the other issues with Mahal's reign was that his match quality was extremely poor. Mahal was to have three different PPV matches with Randy Orton in 2017, and each one was seemingly worse than the one that came before.
The worst of these three matches was the final match of their feud. The two men wrestled in a Punjabi Prison match at Battleground 2017, which was extremely poorly received by fans. Putting two men who had little chemistry in a match type that has never offered a compelling watch was a huge mistake on the part of WWE.
The finish involved the return of the 7-foot-tall The Great Khali. Khali came down to the structure to prevent Orton from escaping from the Punjabi Prison. Mahal then escaped, retaining the WWE Title in the process. The potential of Khali with Mahal wasn't exactly exciting and clearly wasn't going to add anything of substance to the quality of Mahal's matches. Despite the return of Khali being featured in the main event, the angle and returning of Khali was never mentioned on WWE programming ever again.
