The return of Shane McMahon to WWE TV in 2016 was one of the more overcomplicated storylines of the entire WWE PG Era. What should have been a simple re-introduction of a beloved character, was instead written with numerous layers that never got resolved or met their natural conclusion.

Shane returned seeking control of RAW on the 22 February 2016 edition of the show. Vince McMahon said he was going to allow this to happen if and only if, Shane could defeat The Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell at WrestleMania 32. Vince added the stipulation that if Shane lost, he would have to give Vince the key to a mysterious "lock box".

Fans had no idea what this "lock box" was or what its contents were. WrestleMania 32 came and went and Shane lost to The Undertaker. However, on the following night on RAW, Vince decided to put Shane in charge of the show for the night, rendering the match the night prior completely pointless. Vince also mentioned that the "lock box" was going to remain unopened.

The "lock box" was never be mentioned on WWE TV ever again, making fans question why WWE would introduce an exciting plot point only to never have it explained.
