10 Biggest Unsung Heroes Of WWE's Current Era
5. Dakota Kai
Dakota Kai was overshadowed at TakeOver 30. Despite working with Io Shirai for the NXT women’s championship, there was no major feud going in, with NXT creative focused more on the Pat McAfee/Adam Cole pairing than they were in making a dynamic narrative for their women’s title. Kai and Shirai delivered an excellent match, with Dakota showcasing her skills in the ring as a heel challenger, proving that she‘s capable of carrying the NXT women’s division on her shoulders if she wins that title someday.
NXT has recently not been focusing on its women as much or as brilliantly as it has in recent years, screwing over Kai in numerous ways. Her feud with Tegan Nox didn’t get a satisfying payoff, her pairing with Raquel Gonzalez has never been properly fleshed out and some still think that she shouldn’t have turned heel upon returning from injury.
Yet despite all these hindrances, Kai is just too brilliant at this to be ignored. She’s one of the best promos in the world, is an experienced veteran who knows how to pace a match and has been better than ever since coming back from injury. One day, she won’t need to be described as underrated.
