Chris Jericho described it as the loudest pop he'd ever experienced inside a wrestling ring. The event was Slamboree in 1998, and Jericho was scheduled to defend his WCW Cruiserweight Championship against the winner of a battle royal at the event. Jericho was at the peak of his game at the time, doing some of the best heel work of his career.

Jericho acted as the announcer for the battle royal, running down the participants in a variety of hilarious ways before settling in for what should have been a routine title defence immediately after. The battle royal came down to Ciclope and Juventud Guerrera, a non-entity against a man Jericho had already defeated on a number of occasions.

As soon as the two shook hands and Juvi jumped over the top rope, the Worcester crowd knew something was up. The murmurs grew to a rabble which grew into a roar, as Ciclope unmasked to reveal himself as none other than The Man of a Thousand Holds, Dean Malenko.

Malenko went on to defeat Jericho for the title, and for a brief moment the WCW Cruiserweight Championship was the hottest title in the pro wrestling world.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
