The Invasion might be the biggest missed opportunity in professional wrestling history. Pitting WCW and ECW’s invaders against WWE’s biggest and brightest should’ve been easy money, and provided one of the most memorable angles of all time. Fans had been dreaming about seeing these wrestlers collide for years, and finally, it looked like their prayers were about to be answered.

But WWE opted against buying-out WCW’s most expensive contracts, and instead of Sting and Goldberg, wrestling fans were treated to the likes of Shawn Stasiak and Chuck Palumbo. Booker T and DDP aside, WCW’s biggest stars opted to sit at home and let their contracts expire instead of joining WWE, and given the lowball offers they reportedly received, it’s hard to blame them.

Had they crossed over to WWE, the Invasion would’ve looked completely different. There would’ve been no need for the likes of Kurt Angle and Steve Austin to defect to the Alliance, and instead of forcing guys like Rhyno into the main event, WWE would’ve been able to deliver on legitimate dream matches: Goldberg vs. Steve Austin, Sting vs. The Undertaker, and countless others.

The Invasion angle effectively ended the Attitude Era and sent WWE towards Ruthless Aggression on a sour note. WWE would’ve still established an industry-crippling monopoly, but they’d have unquestionably emerged with the most star-studded roster in wrestling history. This would’ve helped keep their main event scene fresh for years to come, and transformed one of wrestling’s most demoralising angles into the game-changing piece of storytelling it should’ve been.
