WrestleMania X must have been a sweet evening for Bret Hart. As good as toppling Ric Flair for his first WWF Title in 1992 must have been, what happened inside Madison Square Garden in 1994 let Bret know that Vince McMahon really needed him.

Lex Luger had flopped as a babyface and the titanic Yokozuna required a good guy foil in order to be effective. That's where Hart stepped in, and he was even able to put younger brother Owen over earlier in the night to sow seeds for a summer program over the federation's top title.

Defeating Yoko and ending the tenth 'Mania card as champion vindicated Bret's own thoughts that he was the best worker McMahon had on his books.

Little needs to be said about what happened inside the ring on 9 November 1997, because almost every wrestling fans knows all about the 'Montreal Screwjob' by now.

Instead, examining Bret Hart's crushing disappointment over being cast aside from Vince McMahon is much more interesting.

More so than most, the Canadian viewed holding the WWF's top prize as proof positive he was one of the best wrestlers on the planet. Whether he took things too seriously or not, this was all real to Bret, and it must have destroyed him to be cruelly deposed by McMahon due to an impending departure for WCW.

Hart's fans were similarly disillusioned, not knowing whether to follow Bret to Atlanta or remain loyal to a product they had enjoyed for years.
