10 Biggest WrestleMania 33 Missed Opportunities

4. Neutering The Mixed Tag

John Cena, Nikki Bella, The Miz, and Maryse were set for a great, hate-filled match at WrestleMania. The promo work throughout the build was absolutely tremendous, with The Miz & Maryse’ impersonations going over strongly, and Cena on top of his game as a no nonsense shooter. Their venom built immense anticipation for the match, but sadly, it fell short.

Lasting a shade under 10 minutes, it became nothing more than a setup for John’s post-match proposal. It was the matinee before the main show, and the performers barely had a chance to get out of second gear. WWE could have chopped five minutes from one of the night’s longer matches and used them here, but they didn’t, and the result was a limp, curtailed bout between four performers who deserved better.

It was hard to not feel let down by Cena/Bella vs. Miz/Maryse, and it’s bewildering that WWE would go to great effort throughout the build, only to deliver such a flat conclusion. Instead of paying-off one of their strongest stories in the ring, WWE dropped the ball with the mixed tag match, and started the show’s lacklustre second half on a bad note.
