10 Biggest WrestleMania Upsets

3. The Miz Defeats John Cena - WrestleMania 27

In hindsight, the WWE really booked themselves into a corner at 'Mania 27. The main event was a lose-lose situation, with neither superstar popular enough to justify a main event victory. Yet another Cena PPV victory and title reign would further the stagnation which had well and truly set in by this point, while having a cowardly, weak character such as The Miz on top to close WrestleMania didn't seem an ending that appealed to anybody. Their eventual solution was far from satisfactory, but must go down as one of the biggest shocks in the history of WrestleMania. For the vast majority of Miz's career, nobody would have foreseen him headlining 'Mania in their wildest dreams - let alone beating John Cena in the process. The WWE's way around this was to have Miz rely on extreme interference from The Rock - "the host of WrestleMania" - which resulted in an outcome both shocking and deeply unsatisfactory. Whereas the previous couple of entries in this list managed to simultaneously elevate both participants, this main event did no favours for either man, especially the winner. The Miz was never given a chance to prove himself as a worthy champion, spending the entirety of his reign as a lucky, cheating heel with no real legitimacy. https://vimeo.com/90873415
