10 Biggest Wrestling Belt Controversies
10. The Original Screwjob
Imagine, instead of letting Becky Lynch hand off the Raw Women's Title to Asuka and celebrate her pregnancy, WWE had legit screwed Bex out of the belt and sent her packing. That's sort of what happened to Wendi Richter after 239 days as WWF Women's Champ in 1985.
She was always losing the title - she didn't have a choice.
Wendi had been going through some contractual troubles with Vince McMahon, so the boss decided to bring back The Fabulous Moolah, slap a mask and gimmick on her, and have 'The Spider Lady' shoot on Richter during a live event in New York. Despite kicking out of Moolah's pin at one, the referee continued counting and made the title switch official.
Furious, Wendi reportedly left the building and the company. Meanwhile, Moolah held the title until July 1986 before dropping it to Velvet McIntyre. Richter's loss wasn't planned, she didn't know it was going to happen and she didn't mend fences with WWE until being inducted into the HOF in 2010.
