6. The Great Khali’s Return

Another incident where fans – this one included – overreacted and got it wrong was in late July, when the Great Khali made his unexpected return at Battleground.

Capping off a fairly dreadful PPV, Khali showed up at the end of the main event to screw Randy Orton, and allow Jinder Mahal to escape the Punjabi Prison with his WWE Title in tow. The story was even picked up by more mainstream media, including Metro in the UK, who published the piece "People Are Really Unhappy With The Return Of The Great Khali To WWE."

From there, many started worrying that this one-off return might be leading to a match at SummerSlam, with those fears being compounded by speculation that Orton vs. Khali could be in the pipeline.

Thankfully though, all that anguish and Khali-bashing ultimately amounted to nothing. Khali hasn’t been seen on TV since, and Orton instead went on to face Rusev at SummerSlam, and though their match degenerated into a point 10-second squash, that was surely better than Orton vs Khali.
