10 Biggest Wrestling Matches That Never Happened

2. Steve Austin vs. Goldberg

In the late ‘90s, the ultimate dream match was Steve Austin vs. Goldberg. These were two guys positioned at the top of their respective companies, and both were booked in a way that felt like neither guy could have ever been beaten in clean fashion. So how would a match between the two most dominant babyfaces in the industry have played out? We’ll never know.

Goldberg came into WWE the night after Steve Austin called it a career (without really letting others know that was the case). It was a cosmically cruel case of bad timing. The two bald, black trunk wearing badasses could have saved the Invasion angle had Vince been willing to pony up some major cash to bring in the WCW star a couple years earlier. Unfortunately he didn’t bother.

Because of the boss being unusually cheap, we never got the match at all. The only physical contact we ever got between the two was a Stunner from Austin after the amazingly terrible Mania XX match between Goldberg and Lesnar. And since Goldberg was so soured on wrestling at that point, and Austin’s neck was in such terrible shape, there would have just been too many hurdles to overcome to get them back in the ring against each other.

The two have likely battled millions of times in videogames over the years, but never locked up once a single time in reality.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
