10 Biggest Wrestling Matches That Never Happened

6. Steve Austin Vs. CM Punk

Most fans have absolutely given up hope that Steve Austin will ever wrestle another match. It’s just not going to happen. But before the Brock Lesnar tease, the last real chance to see him in a ring seemed like it was going to be against CM Punk.

The two were considered to have a match in 2012, but Punk ended up taking on Chris Jericho instead. While those two had a fine feud, it was nowhere near what a WWE Heavyweight Champion Punk vs. Austin could have been. The match likely would had been booked as a babyface vs. babyface affair like Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan. There’s no way they would have turned Austin for his return, and Punk was too hot at the time to play the heel either. Still, it would have been a blast to see the rebellious stars facing off.

If you watched Austin’s year of hosting Tough Enough, you could see the man was in great shape, and that he looked like he was still able to put on one hell of a match. Unlike a Lesnar bout, Austin would have been able to protect his neck much better against Punk. He wouldn’t have had to take a bunch of crazy suplexes, and instead could have brawled it out like days of old.

The promo work between the two would have been phenomenal, and the match itself would have been one of the biggest showdowns of this past generation. But at this point, it’s just too late to happen. Austin is almost 52, and Punk is happy staying away from WWE. We had our chance a few years ago, and it looked somewhat promising for a bit, but it’s always going to have to remain a dream.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
