10 Biggest WWE Attitude Era Controversies

3. The Montreal Screwjob

So much has been written about the events of the 1997 Survivor Series show main event between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart that it's almost impossible to give a fresh take on things without retreading old ground. With that in mind, this is one issue which will never stop being explored, because it was one of the most fascinating nights in wrestling history. About to leave the WWF for WCW and not entirely chuffed about the prospect of losing the WWF Heavyweight Title to his real-life rival Shawn Michaels, Hart went into the title match at Survivor Series thinking that the bout would end in disqualification. Unfortunately for he, Vince McMahon, Michaels, Triple H and referee Earl Hebner had concocted another plan. Once Michaels locked Hart in his own Sharpshooter submission move, Vince called for the timekeeper to ring the bell. Thus, Bret had effectively been screwed out of the belt, and wasn't allowed to leave the WWF with his head held high. The incident is explored in-depth during the compelling 'Wrestling With Shadows' documentary, showing incredible backstage footage before and after the match.
