10 Biggest WWE Creative Mistakes Of 2020 (So Far)
5. Charlotte To NXT
It’s fair to say that Charlotte Flair’s Royal Rumble victory in January of this year was not received well. Charlotte has dominated the women’s division since her main roster debut and her Rumble victory felt like just another accolade to give to ‘The Queen’ while other talents continued to be overlooked.
A potential match against SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley didn’t exactly excite the fans, and nobody wanted to see Flair and Becky Lynch battle for the millionth time over the Raw Women’s Championship.
Ultimately, Charlotte didn’t choose either of these options and instead became the first Rumble winner ever to cash in her championship opportunity on an NXT Title, and faced Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania.
While the move was divisive, particularly after Flair defeated Ripley to capture the NXT Women’s Championship, it did offer WWE the chance to do something a bit different and potentially 'elevate' the NXT Women’s division (not that it really needed elevating).
The more optimistic fans hoped to see Flair work with some fresh faces on the NXT roster and eventually put someone over, in turn making them a major star in the company. Instead, Charlotte appeared across all brands, making her appearances on NXT feel less special, and dropped the title in a triple threat match without being pinned.
In the end, Charlotte didn’t do much of anything to help NXT and only served to halt the momentum that Rhea Ripley had picked up prior to feuding with Flair.
