The apathy towards Charlotte Flair’s Royal Rumble win came not only from her perceived stranglehold over the women’s division ever since her arrival on the main roster, but also due to the fact that a fresh face was strongly rumoured to win the match prior to the event, which obviously didn’t materialise.

Shayna Baszler was the heavy favourite to win the Women’s Royal Rumble in the weeks leading up to the show and she was seen by many as a perfect choice to add some fresh blood into the Women’s title picture. So when she entered the match at number 30, fans were expectant and excited to see the start of a new chapter in the division.

It was deflating for many to see Baszler dumped out by Flair and not get the big victory that people were anticipating. Shayna did eventually debut on the main roster by attacking Becky Lynch and then putting in a dominant performance in the Elimination Chamber to earn herself a shot at Lynch’s title at WrestleMania.

After a shaky start, the former UFC fighter was seemingly back on track as we arrived at WrestleMania, but a tame roll-up was enough for Lynch to retain her title and defeat Shayna in her first meaningful match on the main roster.

Shayna has become a pale imitation of the dominant force she was in NXT, and with Vince McMahon reportedly losing interest in her, that doesn’t look like changing any time soon.
