There was an air of inevitability about Triple H's win in the 2002 Royal Rumble, and to many his spot in the main event of WrestleMania X-8 would have been better given, once again, to The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin.

But, when you go back and look at the reaction the Game received on his return to Monday Night Raw two weeks earlier, it's hard to argue that WWE made the wrong decision.

Much of that owed to a long-term absence from our screens. Trips was sidelined for more than seven months with a career-threatening quadriceps injury sustained on an episode of Raw back in May.

Stephanie McMahon's squeeze had missed the entirety of the Invasion angle as a result, but the mammoth ovation he received on his return had to have helped soften the blow.
