More specifically, the letdown here is that Vince McMahon chose to replace Ric Flair with Sid Justice in the WrestleMania VIII main event picture.

All signs were pointing towards Hulk Hogan vs. Flair in the lead up to the event. As soon as Ric signed on with the WWF in late-1991, it appeared obvious the company would settle the score between NWA/WCW in-ring brilliance and WWF marketing power.

The fact McMahon scrapped such a dream match is still a sore point.

Justice was never going to pull the same kind of match out of Hulk that Flair would have, but Vince was less concerned about match quality and more interested in money. The Wrestling Observer have, for years, concluded that Vinnie Mac got cold feet once Hogan vs. Flair failed to draw monster business on the house show circuit, and thus decided that Sid should tangle with Hulk, whilst Flair battled Randy Savage in the mid card instead.

Two years later, WCW were the first ones to present Hogan vs. Flair on pay-per-view (Bash At The Beach 1994). As much as McMahon might not have believed he was missing out in '92, fans who had anticipated WrestleMania on the strength of that one match alone were left disgruntled.
