There were similarities drawn between Bill Goldberg and Brock Lesnar when the latter crashed onto the WWE scene in early-2002. Both had backgrounds as real athletes, both were heavily-muscled and both were booked as squash match artists early in their respective runs. A match between them seemed like heaven.

It'd soon turn into hell.

Fans in Madison Square Garden already knew that Lesnar and Goldberg planned to leave the company after WrestleMania XX. Throw the ever-popular Steve Austin into the mix as special referee and WWE had a powder keg situation on their hands. To fans, Austin was the only one worth caring about in the match.

Boos and jeers rang out for two of the biggest stars of the era. Unable to overcome the New York crowd's scathing negativity, Goldberg and Brock had a disjointed singles match famous only for the fact it was a disaster. They'd take until Survivor Series 2016 to put things right.
