5. Eric Bischoff Challenges Vince McMahon To A Fight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWi0qv184FY With the Monday Night War's momentum heading back to the WWF, Eric Bischoff decided to pull a publicity stunt for his Slamboree 1998 pay-per-view. On the May 11, 1998 edition of Nitro, Bischoff presented a video of himself working out while challenging Vince McMahon to show up and fight him at Slamboree. Bischoff reiterated his challenge on WCW Thunder later that week. In response, the WWF's super lawyer Jerry McDevitt issued a press release stating that McMahon would not be appearing at the pay-per-view. Unfortunately, this is professional wrestling and fans have been trained to take "this guy absolutely will not be here" to me "this guy is totally showing up." McMahon himself issued a statement later, stating:
"I consider Bischoff's 'challenge' a cheap and desperate tactic to increase WCW pay-per-view buys. I will not do anything to help WCW increase their PPV buys. Therefore, I will not appear at Turner's next PPV as invited. However, if Mr. Bischoff is hell bent on fighting me, then such a fight can be arranged at any time, in any parking lot in the country, void of television cameras, photographers, and public announcement."
Needless to say, McMahon did not show up at Slamboree, despite it being mentioned every five minutes by the announcers. Bischoff declared himself the winner of the "match" by countout.
