In February 2021, AEW & NJPW announced that they had formed a formal partnership between the two promotions. In 2022, they then held a cross-promotional event that has since become an annual tradition. The working relationship between the two is clearly incredibly strong, with the likes of Will Ospreay, Jay White and Hiroshi Tanahashi appearing on AEW programming since the partnership began. Bearing that in mind, the partnership between CMLL and AEW, announced in October 2023, could signify big things for the Mexican promotion.

For most of 2023, it seemed completely ridiculous to suggest that AEW & CMLL would form a working relationship, with Tony Khan going on record to state that he wanted no part in a promotional war between AAA & CMLL. However, the announcement in October that CMLL would be working with AEW sent shockwaves through the wrestling world.

Perhaps it’s too early in their relationship to suggest that there will be a full-blown event between the two promotions, but it’s a distinct possibility. In reality, there will likely be a brighter spotlight shone on CMLL during the Forbidden Door PPV in 2024, with the opportunity for a bigger event in the future. Expect to see many more CMLL performers appear in AEW throughout 2024.
