Big Match John’s run with the U.S championship was one of the best parts of his career in terms of in ring work, and much of this success was based on his open invitational programme. It was a highlight of Raw at the time - Cena would invite anyone from the locker room to come out and lock horns with him with the belt on the line.

The finest of these matches came against Geordie high flyer Neville (now AEW’s Pac). The youngster’s star was on the rise at the time, having held the NXT championship in dominant fashion, and here was his highest profile match yet, against the face of the company. The match is an absolute blinder from the off. Cena is remarkably generous here - he makes Neville look the business, allowing the up and comer to show off his notable aerial ability as well as his power game.

It ends in a DQ when Rusev, Cena’s WrestleMania appearance, breaks up the clash to put the hurt on his foe. It doesn’t make the match any less enjoyable, but ultimately they put the emphasis on forwarding the story. A clean finish would have capped off a genuine classic.
