For years, the Royal Rumble was a surefire, can’t screw up hit for WWE. It’s an hourlong match that has so many different elements to it that there’s truly something for everyone. When booked properly, there are multiple periods of drama, excitement, humor and nostalgia all rolled up into one neat package.

But in recent years, the Rumble has become excruciatingly bad. Poor pacing, lazy performances, bad booking and just a lackluster effort all-around turned the last few Rumbles into jeer-fests for fans. John Cena winning in 2013 to face The Rock for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was such a foregone conclusion that fans could have gone to the bathroom during the Rumble and not missed anything.

Batista’s 2014 win, coupled with Daniel Bryan’s absence from the Rumble, was universally panned. Roman Reigns’ anointment at the 2015 Rumble, coupled with Bryan’s early ouster, resulted in the worst Rumble of all-time. And last year’s Rumble, which featured Roman taking a nap for literally half the match and Triple H putting himself over with 10 minutes of work, was an uninspired attempt to cement Roman as a top guy and simply backfired.

This year, however, we have a hell of a lot of star power, some unpredictability, and the hope that springs eternal with the Rumble. Can the 2017 Royal Rumble deliver an entertaining, dramatic match that fans can enjoy? Or will people be grumbling about yet another disappointing year?
