10 Classic Teams Who Returned To WWE Past Their Prime
3. The Headbangers
When the tournament brackets were announced to crown the inaugural SmackDown Tag Team Champions, one name on the list of participants stood out as a complete oddity in the mix. That name was The Headbangers.
Having not appeared on WWE TV since their initial run ended in 2000, the addition of Mosh and Thrasher was a complete head-scratcher. Their inclusion was made all the more bizarre by the fact that the announcers made little reference to the blatant anomaly. Nevertheless, the team returned for the first time in sixteen years on 20 August 2016.
The homecoming proved to be short-lived; the grimy rockers lost to eventual winners, Heath Slater and Rhyno, in just under three minutes. The Attitude Era tandem returned a month later to take on The Usos in a Survivor Series qualifying match, which saw similar results (they lost in under 90 seconds). The former WWF Tag Team Champions made their final appearance two weeks later, capping off their return run with yet another loss.
With such short matches and only three in-ring appearances to their name, it's odd that WWE brought them back at all. Notwithstanding, it was refreshing to see that the team themselves had changed very little, despite the lengthy time in between.
