8. Finn Bálor

CM Punk turned the wrestling world upside in 2011 with his infamous pipe-bomb promo, blowing the door open for independent standouts to make it in WWE. It may be a stretch, but Finn Bálor did the same for gaijins and junior heavyweights in New Japan Pro Wrestling just two years later, when he established Bullet Club alongside Karl Anderson, Bad Luck Fale, and Tama Tonga.

It was the runaway success of Bullet Club that led to the then-called Prince Devitt being signed by WWE, and the rest is history. Punk was gone by the time Finn Bálor arrived in NXT, meaning Punk vs. Bálor was forever resigned to the bin of what could have been.

A match between CM Punk and Finn Bálor would have been on for the ages, if you'll allow the cliches to run wild. It is easy to imagine the two putting on everything from a technical classic to a wild brawl to anything in between. Punk didn’t have the physical edge over many opponents throughout his career, but that is the situation he would find himself in against Bálor.

Punk reacting to the appearance of the 'Demon' Bálor would be a thing of beauty too.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
