10 Cringe-Worthy Interviews With The Undertaker
7. Sitting Idle While Vader Snaps – 1997
In 1997, the WWF tried to impress international audiences. To build on a global reach surpassing that of WCW, WWE sent Vader and 'Taker to promote their product during an episode of Good Morning Kuwait, which couldn’t have gone worse after the host asked, “In Kuwait, they say that this wrestling is not for real. Is it like you act or?”
The Last Outlaw responded quite cordially: “You know, that’s such an unoriginal question for someone to ask...wrestling is one of the finest athletic endeavors you’ll ever see.”
Vader’s answer was far from affable: “While my astute colleague...is a very diplomatic individual, I’m perhaps not so diplomatic.” No words from Big Van’s mouth were ever truer, for mere seconds later, he had the host by the lapels and shouted, “Does that f*cking feel fake?”
Police were called. Vader was charged with assault and using obscene language on TV. WWE tried to get their performers out of situations such this within 24 hours, but due to a national holiday, Vader was cooped up for almost two weeks.
Whatever WWE hoped to gain, it slipped right from their fingertips. Pro wrestling was unofficially banned in Kuwait for over a decade; a major event was not held again until 2009. While Booger Red remained cool during the altercation, he might have been able to save face for WWE – and possibly a colleague too – if he had intervened.
Almost any attempt to de-escalate would have come off better than an assault on the host.
