10 Cringe-Worthy Interviews With The Undertaker
4. Taking Phone Calls – 1995
Anytime The Undertaker spoke about wrestling without sporting his classic western garb was discomforting, but unfortunately, even in full costume, some appearances were still unnerving. Such is the case during a 1995 interview with New England Sports World, in which the Master of Mindgames took phone calls from fans.
The Deadman was known for being a backstage leader of the WWE, and for quite some time, he was also one of the leading faces of the organization. This meant it was no surprise to see him promoting upcoming events as well as representing the WWE brand. However, he was no John Cena; although clad in his classic Morticia outfit, he was fairly out of character as he spoke earnestly during several of the questions and, more often than not, mumbled the answers into his microphone.
At the time, kayfabe was not completely lost on wrestling fans, and many performers stayed in character in and outside of the ring. While some wrestlers were moving toward down-to-earth characters, The Undertaker’s persona was still far from realistic, and the WWF did almost anything to protect the aura. The Lord of Darkness speaking as a commoner, while wearing the black suit with purple gloves, tore at WWE’s and Mark Calloway’s hard work.
Plus, if he rarely spoke to fellow superstars at the time, why would 'Taker have answered phone calls from random fans?
