WWE's resident Scot perhaps finds himself in a similar position to that of Johnny Gargano, in that, while he is obviously very talented, he is of a similar age and profile to a host of other up-and-coming NXT stars, with no guarantee that all of them will make it it to the top.

What could disadvantage McIntyre over, say, Adam Cole or Anrade Almas is that he carries the burden of already having, if not "failed", then at least failed to set the world alight during his previous spell on the main roster.

This could affect both audience responses - mainstream crowds tend to be very different from the intimate ones assembled down in Orlando - and, accordingly, the way in which the Raw or SmackDown creative teams attempt to book him.

Compounding this is the fact that he's currently injured. Had he remained fit, he may have been looking at a main roster berth in the upcoming post-WrestleMania Superstar Shake-Up. Now, it's altogether unclear what lies ahead.
