10 Defining Matches That Make People Hate John Cena
7. John Cena vs. Umaga (Last Man Standing Match) - Royal Rumble 2007
The rise to prominence of Umaga back in the mid-2000s was a great example of the WWE handling a star's push brilliantly. In many ways similar to Ryback a few years later, Umaga steadily made his way through the WWE roster by going on a huge unbeaten run. Umaga had knocked off the likes of Triple H and Shawn Michaels, and had yet to be pinned when he was deemed the number one contender for the WWE Championship. The champion at that time? John Cena. Naturally, Umaga's undefeated run came to an end at New Year's Revolution of 2006, when Cena pinned him with.. a roll-up. For a guy who had just gone 34 matches undefeated, that was a pathetic piece of booking from the WWE. Umaga claimed the result was a fluke, and eventually John Cena would put his title on the line in a match that perhaps sums up his character best, a Last Man Standing contest. That took place at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view of 2007. The match itself had some decent back and forth, but it was inevitable there would only be one winner. Amazingly, Cena had a spleen injury written into the storyline, but yet still managed to outlast Umaga and consign him to another defeat. That was enough to promptly bury Umaga, and his career went rapidly downhill until his eventual release. This was a classic case of Cena not putting over talent - and the circumstances surrounding it were ridiculous.
