10 Defining Matches That Make People Hate John Cena
8. John Cena vs. Rob Van Dam - ECW One Night Stand 2006
Of all the matches in John Cena's career that have seen him garner plenty of heat, there cannot be any bigger than ECW's One Night Stand show in 2006. By that time in his career, he was into his second reign as WWE Champion, and those feuds against the likes of Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle had seen the tide turn massively against him. He was becoming more and more unpopular, and he was about to step into a real cauldron of fire at One Night Stand. Rob Van Dam chose to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase at the event, and given how it was an ECW event, the heat on Cena was absolutely huge. The crowd was full of fans from the Attitude Era, and they were in no mood to see Cena leave with the belt. The crowd reactions towards Cena in the year before this event had started to get worse and worse - but it was taken to a whole new level at One Night Stand. It was almost like Cena was taking on the legacy of the Attitude Era that evening, and it was a match that made him immensely unpopular. When Edge came out and speared Cena to enable RVD to pick up the win, the reaction from the crowd was huge. They didn't care who was under that mask, in all fairness - they just wanted to see Cena come up short. This was undoubtedly the most defining evening of John Cena's career - at least in terms of how high his heat spiked. From that point onwards, the reaction from the ECW crowd set the tone for what have seen over the last eight years.
