10 Desperate Moves WWE Made In A Panic Over Low Ratings
9. Edge & Lita's Live Sex Celebration (2006)
Sex sells, a fact WWE is all too aware of and in 2006, they looked to capitalize on that idea with a live sex celebration that would cap off a wild 24 hours for new heavyweight champion Edge. The idea of such a celebration perfectly fit the Rated R Superstar and his "sinister sexpot" Lita, who had become one of the most devious and despicable in duos in wrestling in the six months that preceded that cold, January evening. Live from Hershey, Pennsylvania, home of one of the biggest and most popular amusement parks in the country, they engaged in a graphic display of affection that actually featured the redheaded Diva getting completely naked. The segment did as it was designed to do, drawing the biggest rating in quite some time. But the desperation was obvious. Worst of all, it angered one of the venues the company ran twice a year in the Giant Center. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x258mka_edge-lita-live-sex-celebration_sport Remember how I mentioned Hershey being home to a huge amusement park? It is also a home to a strong family environment. Crowds are made up of as many children as adults and the idea of such a risque segment did not please Giant Center officials at all. Add to that the fact that one of Lita's...um, girls...popped out in the middle of the segment and briefly made it to air further infuriated management. It would be three years before WWE was allowed to broadcast live from the arena. And ratings never quite got back to that level the rest of the year.
