10 Desperate Moves WWE Made In A Panic Over Low Ratings
3. Hot Lesbian Action (2002)
The fall of 2002 was a turbulent time for WWE. The company was nowhere near as popular as it had previously been and the return of Eric Bischoff to pro wrestling (more on that in a moment) had not quite netted the numbers the company had hoped for. In an attempt to replicate the sexual sleaziness of the Attitude Era, the company devised an angle in which Bischoff would introduce Hot Lesbian Action to the world of wrestling, all under the idea of "sex sells." Bischoff stood in the center of the squared circle, ordered two young women to join him, then provided commentary as they stripped down and began making out before him. It was a disgusting exploitation of women and homosexuality for the sake of publicity and ratings. By the time Three Minute Warning showed up and brutally attacked the women, the segment descended even further into bad taste by championing male-on-female violence. The segment did nothing other than inviting criticism, which it did in bunches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=505E8TzU7m8 Unfortunately, it was not the last time that HLA would be invoked on WWE programming. Instead, the company would make it a centerpiece of Bischoff's feud with Stephanie McMahon, leading to the tease of the boss' daughter partaking in some HLA. Of course that did not happen. A t-shirt was produced sporting the letters HLA but, thankfully, that would be the end of the obsession with pushing lesbianism on television like a bunch of prepubescent teenage boys.
Erik Beaston is a freelance pro wrestling writer who likes long walks in the park, dandelions and has not quite figured out that this introduction is not for Match.com. He resides in Parts Unknown, where he hosts weekly cookouts with Kane, The Ultimate Warrior, Papa Shango and The Boogeyman. Be jealous.
