10 Disappointing Wrestling Reveals That Let EVERYBODY Down

2. Ric Flair Is The Black Scorpion

To end this article, we'll take a look at a brace of wrestling reveals that are classics of their kind, in the same sense that Plan 9 From Outer Space is a classic of cinema. (For younger fans, Plan 9 was essentially The Room of its day).

We previously mentioned WCW's love for convoluted plots, and the Black Scorpion was the company at its best-worst self. For months, WCW's Sting had been tormented by a nefarious figure known as the Black Scorpion who, like the best cartoon villains, would always escape the hero's clutches just before being unmasked.

The problem with the angle was that nobody - not even the writers - knew who the Black Scorpion was. WCW being what it was, when the time came to end the angle they landed on the most nonsensical option available - Ric Flair.

When the Black Scorpion faced Sting at Starrcade 1990, the audience immediately smelled a rat. Not only did the Scorpion look substantially different to his prior appearances, it was obvious that it was Ric Flair under the mask (that's what happens when you put one of wrestling's biggest stars in a mask that only covers half his face).

If you're wondering why Flair was such a bad choice, read the previous sentence - he was one of the biggest stars in wrestling! Not only that, he and Sting had a long and storied history to work with. If WCW had wanted to drum up PPV buys, all they needed to do was have Flair tell Sting, "You. Me. Starrcade".

Not for nothing did this once stand as the worst reveal in wrestling history...
